David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, two Australian cricket players, set a new record for the highest first-wicket partnership for Australia in an ODI World Cup match. They scored 259 runs together in a game against Pakistan at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This score broke the previous record of 183 runs set by Brad Haddin and Shane Watson against Canada at the same stadium on March 16, 2011.
This is also the second-best first-wicket partnership by any team in the history of the ODI World Cup.
Pakistan couldn’t break the partnership of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh in Bengaluru. The closest they came was when Usama Mir dropped a catch from Warner when he was on 10 in the fifth over.
Pakistan regretted this missed chance as both Warner and Marsh, who was celebrating his birthday, scored hundreds off consecutive balls.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium has a great pitch and short boundaries which favor the batters. Both Warner and Marsh took advantage of these conditions, even though they started off slowly.
The runs started coming quickly, especially in the ninth over when Haris Rauf started bowling. Despite the captain Babar Azam’s preference for a traditional field, Rauf insisted on having a slip fielder. But Warner wasn’t bothered and hit Rauf for a four and a six. The first hit went through point, and then Warner scooped the ball high into the Bengaluru sky.
Marsh also hit a series of fours in the same over.
The partnership finally ended when Mir caught a sharp ball at short fine to dismiss Marsh.
